“My Old Ghost” began with Acid loops pieced together in a hotel room in Lyon, later lyricized in Provence, and even later envocaled back in California… and then set aside. For many, many years. Now, revisited, reworked, rearranged, fattened up with some real instruments, it’s finally time to boot it out of my brain like, you know, an old ghost.
my old ghost
she was here when you called me
listening as i answered the phone
she stays in the corner
watching as i sleep alone
my old ghost is hanging around again
my old ghost, back in my life again
my old ghost, keeping me away from you
she stands on the doorstep
waits all day for me to come home
if only you could see her face
when she sees i’m not alone
she was here when i held your hand
here when i kissed you
she was smiling as i pulled the sheets back
laughing as i held you
she waved goodbye
when you left the next day
my old ghost, hanging around again
my old ghost, straining my life again
my old ghost, keeping me apart from you
it’s not enough to draw the blinds
close my eyes and turn my mind off
she’ll still be there
she’s left me once
but never again
she’s hanging around again
my old ghost is hanging around again
my old ghost, wrecking my life again
my old ghost, keeping me away from you
thrum
let’s find a place, a place we can hide
somewhere just for us, that’s safe inside
let’s find a distant room that we can make our own
make the most of what we have
set the others aside
now the constant hum of life
reveals how far we’ve come
yeah the constant hum of life
helps to keep alive the home fire
and the ever beating thrum
we feel the living pulse between you and me
we’re confident we’re building what we need
and the constant hum of life
reveals how much we’ve done
yeah the constant hum of life
helps to keep alive the home fire
and the ever beating thrum
now we find ourselves
in a brand new place
feet on the ground
and we’re not sure how we got here
but we know we’ve found
the comfort of the home fire
and the rhythm of the ever beating thrum
